Crowds Flock To See Mummified Hand
The revered Hand of St James
Published: 10:20 AM - 08-14-11

An ancient relic drew crowds to the Church of St James in the Abbey Ruins during a special weekend for its worshippers.

The Roman Catholic church marked the Feast of St James by receiving the revered Hand of St James for the first time in 25 years.

The mummified hand, unearthed during the building of Reading Gaol in 1786, is kept in St Peterís in Marlow.

But the visiting Confraternity of St James brought it back to the town for the annual celebration, which started on Friday, July 22. The ancient relic they delivered was given to Reading Abbey in 1133 and was used in healing ceremonies.
